Dental implants offer you a permanent solution for missing teeth. A dental implant is typically a small screw shaped attachment usually made from titanium. It is essentially a substitute for a natural root. Once the bone attaches firmly to the implant, then a replacement tooth can be secured to the top of the implant. The great thing about dental implants is that they can look and feel just like a natural tooth they perform just like a real tooth, you can also have multiple implants to support a denture or a bridge
There are many benefits to having dental implants. Firstly they are more comfortable than wearing dentures. This is because there is no movement or slipping as there can be with a denture. Dental implants can also be a viable alternative to root canal work, as the teeth which have been subject to root canal treatment can often be more prone to decay. Implants, never decay and are extremely hard wearing.
When you have lost a tooth there can be many adverse effects. The bone where the tooth was will disappear and this likely will have an effect on the appearance of your face. The area where the tooth lay will become sunken showing premature aging. Implants can work wonders as they will protect the jawbone and act to prevent this from happening.
THE IMPLANT process; what is involved?
Initial consultation & Assessment:
This initial consultation is very important we will be able to discuss all your options and assess the feasibility of implant treatment. At this stage, we will answer any and all your questions and concerns, and be able to provide a written plan which details the sequence of the treatment and all the costs involved.
Implant Placement:
A fairly simple minor surgical procedure, which is performed under sterile conditions at the dental surgery. For the implant, we use local anaesthetic and if necessary that is supplemented by conscious sedation. If after the initial assessment the underlying bone is judged to be deficient there are a number of options available for bone regeneration. This could be carried out prior to or at the same time that the implant is placed. Each case is judged on individual bases.
Integration period:
Some implants are able to be loaded into function immediately or very soon after surgery. However, it is often suggested that a period of approximately three months or more to be allowed for the implant to be fully integrated before loading.
The restorative phase:
Once the implant is integrated the implants may need to be uncovered and be brought into function. This is done with a variety of restorations which range from a single crown to a small or large bridge. Even a removable over denture clipped onto the implant if you prefer. The replacement teeth are constructed in a specialist laboratory who works closely with the dental surgeon to ensure the best restoration possible.
Maintenance:
Patients need to clean thoroughly around the implants as instructed, your dentist will best advise you of how to do this, and you should attend regular reviews so that the health of the soft tissue, bone levels and the integrity of the implant restorations can be monitored
Dental implants can:
Help you regain your confidence
Preserve healthy teeth
And most importantly restore your beautiful smile
